The Fresh Air First Difference

Fireplace Maintenance · Northglenn, CO

Why Rarely Used Fireplaces Still Wear Out?

A fireplace wears out whether you light it every night or twice a year. When it sits between holiday fires, the damper rusts in place, the door gasket dries out in our dry Colorado air, and twigs collect on the smoke shelf. When it burns every night, ash and heat wear down the firebox walls instead. Fresh Air First maintains wood-burning fireplaces across Northglenn and the Denver metro, cleaning the firebox and checking every part you touch. And when a quick clean is all it needs, that is all we do.

Signs Your Fireplace Is Overdue for Maintenance

A fireplace shows wear in the parts you see and touch every time you light it. Each sign is small on its own. Left through a few Colorado winters, they add up to smoky fires, wasted heat and a firebox that needs more than a cleaning.

Glass Doors Haze Over After a Few Fires

A gray or brown film that builds fast on the glass usually means smoldering fires or a door that is not sealing. Both leave soot where you can see it. Glass that stays clean longer means the fire is burning hotter and cleaner.

The Door Gasket Feels Hard or Loose

The rope gasket around the doors should feel soft and spring back. Once it hardens or pulls away, air leaks in and the fire gets harder to control. It is one of the first things we check.

Mortar Joints in the Firebox Look Open

Gaps between firebox bricks let heat reach places it should never reach. Heat and age cause them, and they grow every season. We flag them with photos so you can have them looked at before the next fire.

Ash Spills Past the Grate

Too much ash smothers the airflow under the logs, so fires smoke and struggle. Too little is not ideal either. A bed of about an inch, with the rest cleared, gives most fires a better start.

The Grate Sags or Has Warped Bars

A bent grate lets logs settle against the back wall and block airflow. It also puts more heat into the firebox floor. A new grate costs little and is worth swapping before the season starts.

Heavy soot and ash? A full fireplace cleaning gets priced first, so you can decide. Selling your home, or noticed a change in how the fire burns? A fireplace inspection documents its condition. Cracked firebox walls and hearth repairs go to a masonry contractor, because repairs are not work we sell.

How Much Does Fireplace Maintenance Cost?

Fireplace maintenance is priced from our fireplace cleaning range, which typically runs $130 to $380. Where your visit lands depends on the type of fireplace and how much soot and ash has built up. A masonry firebox, a factory-built unit and a wood-burning insert each need different work.

A fireplace maintained every year usually sits near the low end. You approve the exact price before any work begins.

Fireplace Maintenance Checklist: You or Us?

Most of It Happens Between Our Visits

Most fireplace maintenance is yours, and it takes minutes, not a service call. The yearly visit covers what you cannot see or reach. We would rather show you how to handle the rest than sell you visits you do not need.

Built for Wood-Burning Fireplaces Only

We Show You the Firebox, Not a Checklist

Photos of Every Surface We Touch

You get before-and-after photos of the firebox, damper and doors on every visit. They show what was there, what came out, and anything we flagged, like an open mortar joint or a hardened gasket. No need to climb in and look yourself.

Wood-Burning Fireplaces, Start to Finish

We work on masonry fireplaces, factory-built units and wood-burning inserts. We leave gas fireplaces alone entirely. That focus means our technicians know exactly what soot, ash and heat do to each type of firebox, and what each one needs next.

A Checklist That Stays With You

Most fireplace care happens between visits, so every visit ends with a short list matched to your fireplace. Every finding is explained in English or Spanish. If odor problems return within three months, we come back at no charge.

How Fireplace Maintenance Works, Step by Step

One visit covers the firebox side of your fireplace, start to finish.

  1. 1. Tell Us the Fireplace Type

Book online or call. Let us know whether you have a masonry fireplace, a factory-built unit or a wood-burning insert, and when it was last serviced.

  2. 2. Photograph the Firebox and Damper

A technician photographs the firebox walls, grate, damper and doors. We check the gasket and note anything worn, cracked or out of place.

  3. 3. Clean the Firebox and Smoke Chamber

Once you approve the price, we clear soot and ash from the firebox, damper area and smoke chamber with high-powered vacuum equipment.

  4. 4. Review the Photos and Next Steps

You see the before-and-after photos, hear what we flagged, and get a short list of what to keep up with between visits.

One Visit for the Firebox and the Flue

Plan Both Before the Burning Season

Call or book online. If the chimney is due too, mention it and we can plan chimney sweeping for the same visit, so the firebox and the flue are ready together. Late summer and early fall leave the most flexibility.

  • Note What Has Changed Since Last Winter

Smoke that lingers, doors that haze fast, or a smell that was not there last year all point the technician to the right parts of the fireplace.

  • Have the Insert Manual Handy

For a wood-burning insert, the model number or manual tells us the gasket size and the manufacturer’s care steps. A photo of the label works too.

  • Used Fresh Air First to clean our duct work and dryer vents. We had renters living in the home for 8 years with a few dogs and cats. The company was responsive and they were able to fit us in their schedule within a week of calling. Communication was great and included images. I went with the premium because of how much cleaning was needed. I have several rental properties and will definitely use them again. Excellent Job.

  • We recently used Fresh Air First and they were a great top-notch company to work with. We recently had a large construction project at our house and our air ducts needed cleaning bad. FAF was professional courteous and explained everything before any work was done. They were great and we’re having them come back to do our dryer vent.

    Eric Martinez

  • This company was awesome. They were on time very professional helped me out cleaning out my dryer vent. It was packed full of lint, and he also did let me know that part of the vent had come apart and it was just spraying out into my laundry room. I didn’t even notice and they did go ahead and get that fixed for me. I would highly recommend this company.

Fireplace Care Questions We Hear Most

Fireplace cleaning clears built-up soot and ash. Maintenance is the yearly visit around it: we clean the firebox, damper area and smoke chamber, check the gasket, grate and mortar joints, and photograph everything. If the buildup is heavy, a full cleaning gets priced first so you can decide.

Wait until the glass is fully cold. Then use a cleaner made for fireplace glass and a soft cloth. A damp paper towel dipped in fine white ash also works as a gentle polish. Skip abrasive pads and ammonia-heavy cleaners, which can scratch or cloud the glass, and keep cleaner off the door gasket.

About an inch during the burning season. A thin ash bed insulates the coals and helps the next fire catch. A deep layer blocks airflow under the grate. Clear the extra once it reaches the bottom of the grate, and empty the firebox fully at the end of the season.

Scoop them into a metal container with a tight lid. Set it on a noncombustible surface at least 10 feet from the house, deck and garage. Ashes can hold live embers for days, so never put them in a paper bag, a plastic bin or a trash can.

Not until it has been looked at. Cracks or open joints in the firebox can let heat reach the framing around the fireplace. A hairline surface crack may be minor, but the call belongs to someone who can see it in person. Have it assessed and repaired before lighting another fire.

Mostly the same, with a few extras. Inserts need the same ash and glass care, plus attention to the door gasket, the baffle above the fire and the connection to the flue. Follow the manual for gasket size and cleaning steps, and plan a yearly professional visit for the firebox and connection.
