Chimney Maintenance · Northglenn, CO
Why Colorado Chimneys Need Yearly Maintenance
Colorado is tough on chimneys, mostly in ways you cannot see from the living room. Fires burn smokier at our altitude, and that smoke leaves a little more creosote on the flue walls every time you light one. Over a full winter, it adds up. Fresh Air First checks and clears wood-burning chimneys across Northglenn and the Denver metro, so your next fire starts in a clean flue. You see the photos and approve the price before we touch anything.

- 1/8 inch. The creosote depth at which industry guidance calls a flue due for sweeping.

Chimney Warning Signs Hiding in Plain Sight
Chimney problems rarely start big. They grow a little with every fire, and a Colorado burning season runs from fall into spring. Spot these signs early and routine maintenance is usually enough.
Black Flakes in the Firebox
Dark, crusty flakes on the grate are creosote falling from the flue. It means the buildup has gone past a light coating.
Smoke That Lingers Before It Rises
Smoke filling the opening points to a draft problem. Buildup, a half-closed damper or a cold flue can all cause it.
A Campfire Smell on Warm Days
Creosote gives off a sharp, smoky odor in warm or humid weather, even when no fire is lit.
A Damper That Sticks or Leaks Air
Soot and moisture wear on the damper. A bad seal wastes heat all winter and makes fires harder to control.
Fires That Smolder and Die Early
Dry wood that used to catch fast now struggles. A restricted flue is starving the fire of the draft it needs.
Smoke drifting back into the room is the sign we hear about most, and our guide on why smoke comes back into the room walks through each cause. If the visit finds heavy buildup, you get a price for a full sweep first. Buying a home or recovering from a chimney fire? A documented inspection is the better start. Cracked brick or a damaged crown is masonry work, so we will point you to a masonry contractor. Chimney repairs are not work we sell.
How Much Does Chimney Maintenance Cost?
Chimney services typically run $150 to $375. Where your visit lands depends on what the chimney needs and how much soot and creosote is inside.
A chimney serviced every year usually sits near the low end. One that has gone a few seasons without care takes longer, so it costs more. You approve the exact price before any work begins.

Maintenance, Sweep or Inspection?
We Recommend the Smallest Visit That Works
Most years, a chimney you use often needs maintenance and nothing more. We do not push full chimney sweeping or a chimney inspection by default. The photos and your situation decide, and we explain why before you book. Want the full picture first? See all our chimney services.
| Chimney maintenance | Chimney sweeping | Chimney inspection | |
|---|---|---|---|
| The question it answers | Is the chimney ready for another season? | How do we clear the buildup? | What condition is the chimney in? |
| What happens | Firebox, damper and flue checked, routine buildup cleared, bigger issues flagged | Soot and creosote cleared from the full length of the flue | Flue, liner, damper, connectors and smoke chamber assessed and photographed |
| Best for | A chimney used every winter and serviced on schedule | Heavy buildup, or a season or more without service | Home sales, unknown history, or after a chimney fire |
| When to book | Every year, ideally late summer or early fall | When buildup reaches about 1/8 inch | Before you buy, after an incident, or when something changes |
Why Homeowners Book Our Chimney Maintenance
We Show You What Is Inside Your Chimney
Before-and-After Photos, Every Visit
We photograph the firebox and flue before and after the work, so you see exactly what came out. Keep this year’s photos and compare them next fall. They show how fast your chimney builds creosote and how your burning habits affect it.
Tips That Slow the Buildup
Our technicians explain what they found and what would slow it down. That usually means drier wood, hotter fires, a fully open damper while burning, and clearing ash before it reaches the grate. Small habits like these keep next year’s visit short.
Three Months of Cover After We Leave
If odor or draft problems come back within three months, we return at no charge. Fresh Air First has served Colorado homes since 2018, holds 4.9 stars across more than 200 Google reviews, and explains every finding in English or Spanish.
What Happens in Your Chimney Maintenance Visit
One visit, four steps, and a clear answer about next season.
-
1. Book and Share Your Fireplace History
Book online or call. Let us know how often you light fires, what wood you use and when the chimney was last serviced, so we arrive prepared.
-
2. Check the Firebox, Damper and Flue
A technician photographs the firebox and tests the damper through its full range. Then we look up the flue for buildup, blockages and wear, and measure the creosote.
-
3. Approve the Price
You see the photos and hear what the chimney needs. If the flue needs a full sweep, you get that price first and decide. Work starts only after you agree.
-
4. Clear the Buildup and Review the Photos
We clear routine soot and light creosote. Then you see the before and after photos and get a short list of things to watch before next season.

Book Before Your First Fire
Late Summer and Early Fall Work Best
A cold chimney that has sat unused all summer is the easiest to check and clear. Booking before the first fire also leaves time to plan a full sweep if the photos call for one. Call or book online to pick a time.
-
Let the Fireplace Sit Cold
Skip fires for at least 24 hours before the visit. A cold firebox and flue let the technician check and clear everything safely, without waiting for it to cool.
-
Clear the Hearth and Mantel
Move screens, tools, rugs and anything fragile away from the fireplace opening. A clear path to the firebox keeps the visit tidy and lets the work start right away.

AMAngela McDevittUsed Fresh Air First to clean our duct work and dryer vents. We had renters living in the home for 8 years with a few dogs and cats. The company was responsive and they were able to fit us in their schedule within a week of calling. Communication was great and included images. I went with the premium because of how much cleaning was needed. I have several rental properties and will definitely use them again. Excellent Job.
SPSteven PintoWe recently used Fresh Air First and they were a great top-notch company to work with. We recently had a large construction project at our house and our air ducts needed cleaning bad. FAF was professional courteous and explained everything before any work was done. They were great and we’re having them come back to do our dryer vent.

Quick Answers on Chimney Care
A maintenance visit checks the firebox, damper, connector points and flue. We clear routine soot and light creosote, then photograph the system before and after. Anything bigger, like heavy creosote or visible damage, gets flagged and priced before more work starts. It is the yearly visit that keeps a chimney you use often ready for the next season.
Any wood that is fully seasoned. That means split and dried for six months or longer, until its moisture is under 20%. Hardwoods like oak burn longer. Pine lights fast and burns hot. Dry pine is fine to burn, but wet or green wood of any kind smolders and coats the flue with creosote.
They help a little, but they do not replace a sweep. The chemicals can loosen light creosote so it flakes off, and some of it falls into the firebox. Heavy or glazed deposits stay put. Loosened flakes can also pile up on the smoke shelf, so the chimney still needs a professional look.
Yes, once the fire is fully out and the ashes are cold. A closed damper keeps warm air from escaping in winter. It also stops cold drafts and odors from coming down the chimney. Never close it while embers still glow. That sends smoke and carbon monoxide back into the room.
Late summer or early fall, before you light the first fire. A cold chimney that has sat unused is easy to check and clear. Booking early also leaves time to plan a full sweep if the photos show heavy buildup. Spring works too, right after the last fire of the season.
Partly. You can burn only dry wood, clear ash often, keep the damper working, and shine a flashlight up the flue to look for heavy black buildup. Clearing creosote and judging the flue’s condition are jobs for a technician. A glazed deposit or blockage you miss from below is a fire risk.
A clean flue before the first fire.
